Description

The Virginia Association of Real Estate Inspectors (VAREI) held its 2022 Seminar and Annual Meeting on Thursday, October 6 seminar in Richmond, featuring hot-topic educational sessions for home inspectors. 

The seminar included a catered lunch and was free for VAREI members. The seminar was approved by ASHI for 7 CEs and is approved by Maryland 7 CEs. Virginia, West Virginia and Delaware accept ASHI CEs. InterNACHI awards 7 CEs. In addition, VAREI conducted it's association business meeting that included an update from DPOR, a legislative update from VAREI's lobbyist, and a board of directors election.

The seminar features veteran presenter Jon Bolton who addressed 5 topics: Building Science and Inspection Processes (2 CEs), Faulty Building and Electrical Products (1CE), Reporting Defects: What Do You See, What Would You Say (1 CE), Advanced Plumbing (2 CEs), and Field Finds with Case Studies (1 CE). An optional bonus session provided an overview on inspecting swimming pools, but was not CE eligible.

8:10      Session 1: Building Science and Inspection Processes (2 CEs)

Understanding building design and thermal dynamics – particularly as it relates to moisture issues – is one of the key jobs of the home inspector.  This session will help you identify issues through excellent inspection and reporting processes.

9:50      Networking Break

10:10    Session 2: Faulty Building and Electrical Products (1 CE)

Many defective building products and processes have been incorporated in the home construction. This session will highlight these faulty components so you can readily identify and explain them to your clients.

11:00    Session 3: Reporting Defects: What Do You See, What Would You Say (1 CE)

This interactive session will present photos of numerous field finds and challenge attendees to correctly identify the faults and how to report them. It’s a practical training exercise that will sharpen your inspector’s eye.

12:00    VAREI Annual Meeting: DPOR Update, Lobbying Update, VAREI Elections

1:10      Session 4: Advanced Plumbing (2 CEs)

This session covers various waste and supply piping types, including a focus on PEX. We cover venting, traps, water heater safety features, on demand water heating and more.

3:00      Session 5: Funny Field Finds with Case Studies (1 CE)

There is no shortage of stupid and this session will prove it! Numerous and humorous situations on the funny and frightening right here. This session will include case studies with observations on building science, fiberglass plywood sheathing, self-priming traps, a horrific fiberglass pool installation, balconies, and a hoarder-type house.

4:00      Optional Bonus Session (No CE): Inspecting Swimming Pools: Overview

Learn the basics of what’s involved with a professional pool inspection. You won’t become an expert from this session but you will be able to talk intelligently with your clients about servicing a pool and items that a professional pool inspector evaluates. This session may even motivate you to seek credentials as a qualified pool inspector.

About the Presenter

Jon Bolton holds a BS in Building Construction from the University of Florida. He has been performing home inspections since 1998. He has authored many home inspection related articles for local and national publications. He is the author of the book Tactical Real Estate Negotiator and co-author of The Savvy Agent. He has been featured on several radio programs, in the New York Times, Orlando Magazine, Inspekt Magazine and CFRI, IRC and FABI newsletters. He was an instructor at Home Inspection Academy from 2011-2017.
